I thought we should go ahead and announce now what weekend we plan to do the Renfest this year. It won't be until late October Early November again, but hopefully that gives everyone enough time to plan, assuming those far off friends want to travel across the country to join us.

I also wanted to post that this year is the 35th year for the Renfest, and they are celebrating this one well. It will be a good year to attend.

2009 Meet-IRL is
Friday October 30th thru Sunday November 1st
Pirate Weekend, Arr!

The episode will air on the ION Network on the following dates and times:

Each weekend features its own theme, with special entertainment, contests and events to enhance the patron's experience.

Over 350 shoppes, overflowing with unique arts and crafts or offering delicious foods and beverages, line shaded cobblestone walkways. Hmm. I won't be in school anymore, so football games aren't that much an issue. :) I'll have to see what I'm doing as far as coming down from Dallas. AKA: day off or something.

It's a great event! We come out on Friday night and camp at the campgrounds, go to the fair Saturday, camp Saturday night, and go home Sunday. Good clean fun.

Okay, I might be lying about the "clean" part.

Dear Mom,

The kids are doing great, the baby is starting to walk the furniture now, so she might be walking on her own by the time we see you... can't believe it's only 3 weeks away now.

I know, you're thinking "why is he writing me - he never writes unless something is wrong..." Well, here's the real reason I'm writing... You know that Final Fantasy 11 group I was excited about joining that had that real-life meetup in Houston a few weeks ago that I took Amy and the baby to? Well, as it turns out..... and PLEASE don't tell Dad, because I know how he feels about these types... but.......(BRACE YOURSELF, MOM)........... they're RenFesters.

I know, I know... before you start on the "See? I told you that game was just going to lead you straight to the path to hell" rant, I'm pretty sure I didn't touch anything in their house that had any Cosgerms on it, although I'm going to be taking the baby to the doctor for an inoculation ASAP. Like you always taught me, better safe than sorry.

I did eat some of their barbeque, but it wasn't a turkey leg, so I think I might have dodged the bullet on catching a RenFestation there, too. I've already told Amy to keep an eye out in case I start exhibiting any of the other symptoms Dad was smart enough to tell me about (because really, why don't the schools teach about the dangers of these people?) - like the occasional "thee" and "thou" and hearty belly-laughs. So far so good. But I know the incubation period for the RenFest disease is rather long, so I'll make sure she continues to observe me.

As a precaution, I've had her hide all of the cutlery (so I don't try to convert a butterknife into a dagger) and anything I could fashion into spears or jousting lances (like broomsticks or the banister on the stairs). We've contacted the insurance agency to make sure we have full coverage against pillaging of the house, but the car insurance guy says there's nothing they can do about a conversion of any of the cars to horse-drawn carts. Something about the concept of self-responsibility in Texas law and "it's your own damned fault."

I hate to say this, and this is why I'm writing rather than calling, just in case she overhears me on the phone... but one thing bothers me about Amy - I know she was only in their house for a short while, but she's... how can I say this delicately to my own mother.... she's asked me to call her "wench" a few times. I'm not absolutely sure if she's caught anything, but I'm not convinced she's in the clear, either. Plus, there's a problem I'm sure you can see with this whole situation.... she's the one who knows where all the daggers and lances are hidden! I'm afraid that if she is infected, I might come home some day to a house full of tapestries and a dinner of warm, watered-down beer and dry turkey legs. Who knows what the kids will be dressed like, and I shudder to think what would happen to the pets.

Like I said before, I know how you and Dad always taught me the dangers of Renaissance Festivals, traveling carnivals, gypsies, aboriginal witch doctors, and the French... but please know that this was a totally accidental exposure, and I never meant to subject my family to the dangers of becoming "one of them". I love you and Dad both very much. If we do for some reason succumb to the wretched Faire Fever, I've hidden the wills, life insurance policies, and necessary executed powers of attorney for you and Dad to take care of the remaining kids (if we're lucky enough to have spared at least the older two). They're in the safe under the stairs.

Pray for me, Mother. Pray for us all.

kk, It's working on time to decide and ask for the weekend off! What I suggest is that the person with the most strict work schedule select the day and the rest of us that typically have all weekend of work around it. Please keep in mind that we may have out of state visitors this year, so we need to set it early and we need to sitck to the date we pick strictly. At this point I might suggest either the weekend of October 24th-25th for Hallow's Eve or the weekend of October 31st November 1st for Pirates. Those are typically a lot of fun. JR, Scott, David, what kind of schedule are you all looking at?

Probably meant another "Scott," but I'll reply anyways since that's my name, and <I'm interested>.

I have nothing planned for that time.

Okay, subject of todays production meeting throws a new project on me in November, so I will need to actually do it before then. I'm going to have to push it back a week. That means we are confirming The weekend of October 31st-November 1st Pirate Weekend.

Make your plans and buy your tickets! We'll see you there!

While I'm still planning on going, I haven't made my flight plan yet. Will post here when I get everything settled.

Also, how does this thing usually go down, and what other arrangements do I need to look into? Like, should I rent a car to get from point A to point B, or is there some sort of car pool dealy we figure out? And I'm not sure on living arrangements; it sounds like it might just be one big sleep over, though I don't want to presume that, be wrong, and then have to sleep outside D:

Sarizaddi
09-01-2009, 01:27 PM
There are a few people in the Houston area to bunk with if you came in a day early. I for one have a good amount of space at my house, and we have two cars so we can carpool as much as anyone would like. We drive up on the Friday Morning, to Afternoon, and setup tents and camp and all. We'll bring or go get food, like McDs or Jack-in-the-box or w/e. Friday night once the sun goes down, the camper all start to gather at the main campfire, they do a drum circle, and then there are fire breathers, fire dancers, belly dancers, and other diversions. Some get drunk, some get krunked, lot's of fun.

We wake up Saturday morning around 9 am and then it's time for the fair. We walk the fair all day, seeing the shows, browsing the shops, and it really is an all day affair. You most certainly will not be able to see everything. We usually catch the last jousting event of the day, but that's only if everyone wants to. We eventually wander back to camp and relax for an hour or two. When the sun goes down on Saturday, the fair has a fireworks show to watch. Once that's over, people meet-up back at the circle again, although Saturday is usually busier and more drunken (considering many fair-goers spent a good portion of the day drinking homemade wine and mead and beers, plus what you can buy on the grounds). Eventually we crash Saturday night.

Sunday morning to afternoon we pack up camp. Most everyone will be ready to head back to civilization by then. We drive back, probably order pizza or something simple because after two days of walking and partying, minimal effort for dinner is good. Watch a little TV, rest and recuperate.

I would suggest planning that you could be picked up at the airport, and you can come however many days in advance or stay after as you want, But you probably want to either get in by Thursday night and leave at the earliest on the following Monday.

You don't need to book a hotel or car unless you want one. I have a good sized tent, but only one sleeping bag, so I'll need to get more sleeping bags and chairs, maybe a few pillows. I have the usual camping stuff like a lantern and light and stuff, a couple tiki torches, ice chests, etc.

Here is what to consider, the nights around then are a little cold, and it has been known some years to drop in the thirties. To some people up north, that may not sound that cold, but you might want to pack some warm sleeping clothes. There's a lot of walking and the festival is mostly unpaved, so bring some comfortable walking shoes. It's hit and miss what kind of weather so I would bring a coat, though you may not need it. It might just as likely be warm, so you might want to pack a set of shorts and a light shirt. So basically, just prepare yourself for hit and miss weather the actual day of the festival. Whatever you wear Friday isn't going to make or break you, and what you wear Sunday won't make or break you, because we can either come out a bit late or go home, but Saturday you kinda get stuck dealing with the weather.

I will bring a few torches and insect spray (not likely to need it, but I'll have it) but if you need hypoallergenic stuff, you'll get your own. There's a grocery not far away so from there you can get virtually anything else you need, food or alcohol or whatever. I have extra ear plugs also if anyone will need them (as in, remember that people will party ALL night long, music will be going, people talking as they walk by, the occasional car horn or whatever) but if you want a sleeping mask or whatever bring that (sleeping mask blocks out light). Um...let's see...I guess just anything else you want to party with.

And a computer if you want to LAN. Most everyone brings a laptop (not to the festival grounds, but like the Thursday/Friday before, the Sunday night after). If you don't have a laptop then there might not be another computer to play, except I'm hoping to get my laptop fixed soon so at most there will be one extra computer.

As far as money goes, figure the flight down and back. From there, we can take care of driving you and giving a place to stay. Maybe give yourself $50 in prep getting ready for the festival, like if you think you might want an extra pillow or blanket or beer or Burger King. Then the tickets are about $21 I think, and you usually can spend as much as $50 just being conservative (food and drinks blow money fast) and then whatever extra for souvenirs and medieval goods. The price tag on most anything you want to buy is about $30 to $50 each for the good stuff, and you will find a full costume if that's what you are shopping for can run in the hundreds. Heck, I spent $95 just for a pair of boots. But that's only if that's what you want to shop for. I don't want to scare you about how much anything costs, just to have you prepared. Usually about $100 to $150 in spending money will keep you safe.

And that's about all I think you need. Not a lot more to preparation than getting a ticket and knowing how to pack and having some extra flow in the bank account. We can take care of most of the rest and we all have a great weekend.

Nibu

I might end up doing this if I wait too long to get my ticket. Don't want to keep you guys guessing until the last minute, and then be an inconvenience. I'll try to get my ticket tomorrow though to avoid this.

I think I'm still missing some info, though, like, what airport should I be going to, and where exactly do you guys live? O-o I have the address for the faire, but not much else unless I'm missing it.

BUT

Keep in mind these are hotels near us, not the faire. If you don't do the camping then you will really really miss out on half the fun, but at the same time if you really really don't want to camp then you need a hotel out near the festival...which are a) slim pickens and b) pretty far from the faire grounds, and c) need to be booked now or they won't have a room for you.

Okie-dokey, looking into flights as I type this.

Also, I have my own sleeping bag and stuff, so I'm all set. I think I also have a pup tent and a family-sized tent somewhere, so if anyone wants me to bring those, lemme know. Not sure what condition they are in, though; haven't been used in several years.

Leave ONT 6:40 AM, arrive 11:44 AM; Leave IAH 5:55 PM

Basically just different combos of the same four flights. There are a few other ones where I'd be leaving ONT at 1 AM, arriving at 6 AM, but that seems pretty lame.

Knowing this, is there anyone who would be able to pick me up near my arrival time, and also be able to drop me off (at IAH, obviously) for departure? I'll book my flight according to your convenience if possible. Otherwise, I can just arrange a ride via taxi or something. I think I might have relatives in Houston, but never heard of them/seen them before. Could be awkward :wired:

Edit: And as for housing, I would be most appreciative of crashing at someone's house. I know Sari have offered his up for hosting, and that'd be awesome if I could stay there if its OK

Edit edit: Southwest looks like they have a slightly better deal - flights look to be around the same price, but checked bags 1 and 2 are free; they only go to HOU, though, so not sure how much less convenient it would be for anyone to pick up/drop off there. Either way, won't really have to worry about checking 2 bags in anyways, unless I try to bring that extra tent (in which case, it would be cheaper for me just to buy a tent while I'm there, and leave it).

I'm taking a day or two off just for the prep and airport runs and stuff, so yes, you can get picked up, and again yes my house is free for the crashing. As far as IAH or HOU, I have no particular preference. You know, if the difference is $100 in your flight and the difference is only about $5 or $10 gas, seems like a no brainer.

Maybe if you want to discuss with Yaji or Little, though, as if you came in at the same airport, around the same time would be awesome for 1 trip to the airport instead of 2 would be kewl.

Do we have a rough number of how many tents we have right now? Or more specifically, how many people can those tents accommodate?

I ran to Walmart really quick tonight, and they had a few different sizes. The smallest was for 1-2 people, medium 3-4 people, and the largest was 5-6 people. They were all relatively compact and inexpensive, so I could definitely just buy one before I get on the plane. I just need an idea of whether or not I need to get one, or if we already have enough from other people already having/bringing theirs.

Edit: Just as a note, couldn't find my old tent, so just assume I don't have one in the tent count so far. I'll buy one if need be, though.

Moliana

Sari has a large tent that can probably sleep 4.

I have a small tent that I used last year; it's big enough to just hold a queen size airbed. My plan is to use a sleeping bag in the back of Sari's truck or my car, since getting up from the ground has become problematic for me, so the tent is open for someone to use.

We can always make a Walmart run Friday before we head to the campground, if needed.

Oh and fair warning - last year it got cold at night, so bring warm clothes to layer. We'll pack all the extra blankets we have.

Well, that was fun :)

I've never been to one of those things, and I gotta admit - that was a lot of fun, we're definitely making a yearly trip out of this. Kids had a blast, and my wife convinced me to buy a tent so we can camp it next year for both days. (I am not an outdoors type, and she is... she's been lamenting the fact that we haven't gone camping in 11 years. She's thrilled we found something I find worth giving up cable TV and reliable Internet access for, even if only for one weekend!)

Sorry we couldn't stay longer, the kids were asking to go home for a while there at the end of the day, and we made them stick it out so I could see you guys, even if for 15 minutes... 3 hour drive back home and they wanted to trick-or-treat with their friends. (Didn't quite make it anyway, but they didn't seem to notice since they were so tired.)

Next year, if we do camp it out we might bring a babysitter, or somehow figure it out where I can have a kids' day and a grown-ups' day (or even a half day, whatever) so we can spend a little more time with you guys. I didn't want to drag them along all day with everyone, since adult group dynamics are always awkwardly influenced by kids in the group...

It was really good to finally meet you, Yaji - I felt like I should have stayed and talked more, or at least had a drink with you or something... I'm not a socialite and tend to clam up when I meet people, even if I sorta kinda already know them ;) I will probably be heading to Buffalo for business at least once or twice this year, perhaps I can swing by and grab a bite or something some time :)

I feel like I should write my mom and tell her she was wrong about you guys all along... :consider:

P.S. Moq - you missed a golden opportunity to experience U.S. culture (ok, fantasy subculture) in its full glory - you should kick yourself for not coming!

I had a blast everyone. I'm glad I got to meet so many of you.

I'm glad I got to at least meet you. And I'm excited that you were able to have a good time out there. I know a lot of us would really like to go out there again next year. As for Buffalo, that's a bit of a hike from here (about a 5-hour ride, yikes!), but either way let me know what is happening.

I feel like I should write my mom and tell her she was wrong about you guys all along... :consider:

lol what exactly was she saying =P

Oh and Moq... you never gave us a good enough reason why you couldn't come -_-

Oh God, I didn't know that was Tsuya and his family, I thought they were just some random strangers everyone had made friends with before I had gotten there ;;.

Also, I lost ten bucks in Vegas on some slot machines while waiting for my next plane to board D:

I had mentioned (http://www.nephilim-x.com/forum/showpost.php?p=121978&postcount=5) somewhere along the way that I was a little nervous about being around a group of people such as this. (http://www.nephilim-x.com/forum/showpost.php?p=122058&postcount=16)

:)

And, I'm certainly game for a drive for a longer visit, I just gotta make sure I schedule in enough free time... and it all depends on my travel budget this year, which is unspecified as of yet.

P.S. Moq - you missed a golden opportunity to experience U.S. culture (ok, fantasy subculture) in its full glory - you should kick yourself for not coming!

Oh and Moq... you never gave us a good enough reason why you couldn't come -_-

As I already told you like ten thousand times (ok, it was only 2 or 3, but whatever :P), I really regret I couldn't go and be with you, but if you all are going to do it again (that's...) next year, I can plan ahead of time and try to be there!

Reasons? Well, they go in the range from not enough budget for an express travel to TX to having to stay home that weekend for my "surprise" pre-birthday party :D :P (I already knew all about it, of course!).

Anyway, I am very glad you all had a great time, we want details and pictures, lots of them both! :D

OMG you missed pictures of whips on butts, fire flinging miscreants, and strange foods in the mouths of hungry barbarians!

The only solution is to do it again.
