I'm thinking of starting up Gold Smithing but have a few question before i start,
first off, what other guild crafts will i end up having to raise, secondly how long and much will it take to raise my skill high enough till i can make an ok profit... ($$)

if anyone has any guides they used could you please let me know, it would be much appreciated.

If you get a chance talk to Pulverise is a Goldsmithing mastermind, I think Lucercia is also a Goldsmithing expert.

Goldsmithing is one of the few skills that requires little or no secondary crafts. Goldsmithing is so expensive itself, though that it's better that way. In some places you might see a touch of Bonecraft, Weaver, or something else, but rarely.

Goldsmithing is really expensive and time consuming. Pulverise is a smither and not a gold smither. Lucrecia is the highest gold smither, with me in a far second.

GOLDSMITHING IS PAIN!!!!!

I got Goldsmithing up to 20 over the weekend so I could finally make my Silver Bullets. MAN I don't know what the hell was wrong, maybe the guide I followed was awful - but it was LONG, it was ANNOYING, and it was EXPENSIVE.

The thing that REALLY sucked the most was how RARE skillups in Goldsmithing seem to be. I got Alchemy to 40 in 1/3 the time it took me to get Goldsmithing to 20. Here's what the guide had me doing - legitimate Goldsmithers, feel free to tell me that Goldsmithing SHOULDN'T be this hard, and the guide I had just blew.

1-3: Copper Ingots - Took me FOREVER. Skillups very few and far between.

3-9: Brass Ingots - Very very painful. I bought out the AH and 2 Bazaars of Zinc Ore. Skillup rate still was slow and painful beyond belief.

9-11: Brass Sheets - This was the easiest snyth, and it finally felt like I was skilling up a NORMAL tradeskill. Skillups were typical to what I was used to. I was hoping that it would be this way from then on.

11-13: Brass Scales - Again, this was easy. My hopes were up.

13-18: Silver Ingots - Oh, the pain. This wasn't NEARLY as bad as Brass Ingots, but it was still painful. Rare skillups. I bought out 3 AHs of Silver Beastcoins.

18-20: Silver Ingots - Used the 4 Silver Ore recipe for here. Still painful. Still slow, still expensive.

The only good thing about all of this was that I ended up with STACKS of silver ingots, which I can now make my silver bullets out of. I should have enough silver ingots to make bullets for MANY levels.

JUST getting to level 20 took me most of the DAY on sunday. Seriously. I got to level 20 Alchemy in just a few HOURS. This took half a DAY. Also, I was synthing on GOOD days. Even on Lightsday, which is usually GREAT for getting skillups, I was getting them ridiculously slow. Firesday was no good either.

All I can say is THANK GOD I'M DONE - and woe be to anyone who wants to take up Goldsmithing. You have been warned.

lol, i get skill ups every other synth. ;)

You, sir, are very lucky.

Or I'm just unlucky. I have no idea. I would go 5 or 6 synths in a row with no skillups on Lightsday or Firesday, which when you're using a fire crystal, should be the best days for skillups.

It was just awful. Maybe I just have to blame it on the moon or something.

Note that skillups occur more frequently depending on Moon Phase, and crafting level. =P

I'd heard a lot of information about skillups based on the day of the week, but not much regarding Moon Phase. If I recall correctly, yesterday while I was crafting the moon was Waning around 75%? I know it wasn't Full or New.

lol, i get skill ups every other synth. ;)

you suck! >.<; Gold is slow and expensive for me. I stock up on materials for weeks at a time and craft on the moon/day. Good thing about this approach is that I make up my losses by mining for raw material during the weeks I don't craft.

The main reason I think it is GOLDSMITHING specifically that is slow, and not the day/moon phase is that certain synths I got a LOT of skillups on, and others were absolute crap.

Brass Sheets and Brass Scales were easy as pie. I got skillups every other synth. Not a problem at all.

FORGET IT when it came to Brass Ingots. I got one every 4 synths if I was LUCKY.

I finished Brass Ingots, which gave me crap skillups - and immediately got tons of skillups. Brass scales, still going strong. Finished Brass scales, and immediately was back to crap skillups on Silver Ingots. The change was drastic.

I hope some of Vade's luck with skill ups will rub off on me, because I am going to melt myth. ore into ingots for one or two more lvls (to 39) and then synth the heck out of the ~8 stacks I have aquired thus far. With any luck, this will take me "close" to doing gold ingots. I have a few stacks of silver to make bangles if I fall short. Thing to note... no profit will be made as I will have to synth and desynth all the rings and earrings made from the ingots and pray for a very good sucess rate if my plan is going to work. Moral of my rant, goldsmith is not an easy craft to start out with. Takes much time and much gil, thank goodness for ls support (to all you thfs out there that supplied me w/ coins at a sweet discount :worship: )

PS: if you still want to take up gold, please don't let me stop you, I'm sure you will have much better luck and make much more gil than I! ^^

I'm almost to the point of going full force after Carpentry. Not that that seems to account for much. Let's see, I can make...um...Relic Armors for NIN/SAM/MNK...ok cool. Then...uh...a bookshelf.

Well then...

Oh well, the point is to get to the point of crafting Elemental Staves +1 regularly.

The point is that I would be careful with the Skill. If you're taking Goldsmith all the way, know why beforehand. It's an EXPENSIVE skill to master.

Moon phase and day both play a part in skillups. here's a quick rundown:

If you want skillups, dont' care about success synths, new moon, and on the day your crystal is weak too. Also, this time gives you a better chance at high quality synths.

Just want to get successful synths and a bit of skillups? full moon and on your crystals day, or the day it's strong against.

Forget where I saw the chart that covered all this, I know someone posted it in the forums awhile ago. From the amount of tradeskilling I've done it seems to hold true pretty well. Especially for fishing, I get skillups like mad during new moon. Hope this helps.

Sry I wasnt able to post before, got kind of busy IRL >.>
Ok, for starters, like Sari said, Goldsmithing is expensive on its own.
You DO NOT need to lvl other craft to skill it up. However, you WILL need to
do so once you reach 65-70 if you want to craft certain items. Those crafts
needed are Smithing, Alchemy, Leathercrafting and Clothcraft. All of those
should be level'd to 50~

Now, like Eily mentionned, Full moon and the day opposite to your crystal's
element is the best for skill up, that includes darksday.

Here's a quick guide to get to 50~

lvl1~3 copper ingot (Fire crystal + 4 copper ores)
-keep for later synthing
lvl3~9 brass ingot (Fire crystal + 3 copper ores + 1 zinc ore)
-keep for later synthing
lvl9~12 brass ring (Fire crystal + 2 brass ingots)
-either seel to AH/NPC or keep for D-synth
lvl12~14 brass hairpin (Wind crystal + 1 brass ingot)
-Same as for brass ring
lvl14~18 silver ingot (Fire crystal + 4 silver beastcoins)
-keep for later synthing
lvl18~20 silver ingot (Fire crystal + 4 silver ores)
-keep for later synthing
lvl20~24 silver earring (Wind crystal + 2 silver ingots)
-D-synth for ingots
lvl24~28 silver hairpin (Wind crystal + 1 silver ingot)
-D-synth for ingot
lvl28~31 silver ring (Fire crystal + 2 silver ingots)
-D-synth for ingots
lvl31~33 silver chain (Earth crystal + 2 silver ingots)(this part is skippable)
-sell to AH
lvl33~36 mythril ingot (Fire crystal + 4 mythril beastcoins)
-keep for later synthing
lvl36~39 mythril ingot (Fire crystal + 4 mythril ores)
-keep for later synthing
lvl39~42 mythril earring (Wind crystal + 2 mythril ingots)
-D-synth for ingots
lvl42~47 mythril ring (Fire crystal + 2 mythril ingots)
-D-synth for ingots
lvl47~49 silver bangles (Earth crystal + 3 silver ingots)(skippable)
-D-synth for ingots (even if you HQ you lose 1 ingot)
lvl49~51 gold ingot (Fire crystal + 4 gold beastcoins)
-keep for later synthing

From that point you start using a lot of gold ingots and skill up is harder and
more costly then ever before hehe.

If any of you need info or advice, feel free to /tell me or send me a P-msg on
the forums, or simply post it after here or in the goldsmithing section :)

Have fun with goldsmithing!

I've been hitting goldsmithing - hard. In a matter of 5 days, I've gotten GS to lvl 45.8, and won't stop till I get to lvl 50. And it wasn't toooo expensive, I think I spent around 1.5 mil, and sold about 1.2 mil's worth of stuff.

The key here is to have mules to help you unload a lot of things and to find a few "profit" synths (i.e. stuff you don't use for skillup, but can be made for nice gil) to make some revenue to skillup with.

For me, I found that Darksday was great for skillups. I've been skilling up like mad on those days.

If you have any questions, feel free to comment and i'll try my best to answer. I'm also looking for a woodworker to team-up with to make elemental staves once I get to that area - in addition to interested gardeners who want me to change their ores into beads. I need all the help I can get on my road to 100.

Working together, I honestly think ww and gs can be one of the best one-two punches for crafting.

actually the best thing to do for skill ups is go to this website and keep difficulty between 3.5-4.5 the most I have gotten before was .2-.3 skillup off of 1 synth since SE changed the skillup rate past 50 a few updates ago.

http://ffxi.lokyst.net/timer/crafttimer.html

I have been able to keep difficulty at 3.5-4.5 by just changing my direction, using guild support, using guild advanced support, wearing or not wearing +1 items etc etc there is quite a bit you can do if you understand the underlying factors that go into deteremining if you get skillups.

I will team up with you. I can almost guarantee that by the time you can comfortably hit beads, I can comfortably HQ Staves.

Update

Just hit 47.5 GS a while back - can make some of the republic armor and weapons now :3

Headed to the dreaded gold stage.. for a good 6 lvls. orz. If anyone wants me to craft their GOLD BEASTCIONS into ingots - send me a /tell. I'll do it for you, and you can sell them of your own accord. 1.5 mil per stack :O

And Sari, I'll take you up on the bead offer. Just need to get some more people to perhaps throw in a bead or two for skillups (they get the bead, of course) and perhaps have a shot at a HQ Stave signed by Sarizaddi.

Just a thought!
