For those stuck on Promathia Mission 1-3 (Ancient Flames Beckon), I hope this guide will help you on your journey through Promyvion.
------
For PM1-3, your Promyvion experience is capped at level 30. It is important, then, to make sure you have gear appropriate for the level restriction. In my personal experience from playing WHM in Promyvion - the faerie tunic is superiour to the Seer's tunic because each of the empty monsters you encounter has a different elemental affinity. Their TP attacks are all based on elements, and the bar(element) spell + tunic resists will keep you from taking too much damage. It is not really possible to stay out of the AoE range on the four main floors of Promyvion, because the monsters there aggro true sight.
Anyway, on to the basic structure of Promyvion.
Each Promyvion area you will encounter (Dem, Mea and Holla) is comprised of four floors. These floors are accessed by the "memory stream". You flow through this memory stream by locating and killing a Memory Recepticle - there is one on each of the first three floors of the Promyvion area. Locating them can be a pain, so it is extremely useful to take a RNG in your party who has widescan.
The Memory Recepticle (MR) has a bunch of little monsters it spawns called Strays. In most cases, it is preferable to let your melee party members kill off the Strays while your RNG and BLM/SMN (as appropriate) focus on the MR. Ranged attacks are preferable on the MR because of its AoE. It is called "Empty Seed" and deals considerable damage as well as knocks party members backwards. Empty Seed is dangerous if you do not clear away other empty monsters (Wanderer, Weeper, Seether) - you can get knocked right back into them and link a bunch of extra monsters.
Once you kill the MR, DO NOT ENTER THE MEMORY STREAM UNTIL ALL STRAYS ARE DEAD. If you leave Strays alive and try to access the memory stream, they will interfere with your travel and send you places you do not want to go. It is possible when you kill the MR that no portal to the memory stream will appear - this is not a glitch. Some of the MR are fake, and you will just have to scan or find another MR to try and get to the next floor. Don't let it discourage you :)
The fourth floor of Promyvion gives you access to the Spire area. When you enter the Spire, you will enter a small uncapped area before you enter the Promyvion BC. The BC is accessed through the Web of Recollections at the far side of the Spire area.
As you travel up the Promyvion area towards the Spire, the monsters get progressively difficult. The first two floors, if you get aggro, the monsters are fairly easy to kill with your level 30 cap. However, the third and fourth floors are not so easy. It is preferrable not to get aggro on these floors.
Recollections
If you kill a lot of empty monsters in Promyvion, you may notice three recollections drop from them. These are Guilt, Pain and Fear. These are used to make Anima, and are exceedingly useful for the BC fights at the top of each Promyvion area.
Recollections become anima through the Empty Memories quest, given by Harith in the Duke's residence in Ru'Lude Gardens. Each anima costs 2,000 gil plus the recollection, and they equate to the following:
Recollection of Guilt --> Terroanima
Recollection of Pain --> Hysteroanima
Recollection of Fear --> Psychoanima
A trick I use for remembering this is: Guilt makes you TERRO(ified), Pain makes you HYSTERO(ical) and Fear makes you PSYCHO(tic).
The animas are thrown at the Mega Boss (or the adds it spawns) during the BC battle. You can set a macro: /item "<type>anima" <t>, wait 30 seconds, then alert the next person in the throwing order either via partychat or /tell. Each anima does a different thing:
Terroanima --> Target self-kites for 30 seconds.
Psychoanima --> Target is intimidated by whoever has hate for 30 seconds.
Hysteroanima --> Target is unable to use TP for 30 seconds.
IF YOU ARE USING A SUMMONER'S TWO HOUR, Terroanima is -death-. Terroanima is only recommended in a few situations, from experience:
- your tank is getting really beat up and you need the boss to just run around in a circle and not hit
- you have a bunch of ranged attack in your party (BLM + RNG)
- the mega boss spawns a bunch of adds (you can self-kite the adds and they will vanish when the mega boss dies)
It is preferable to have a set order in which to use the Hystero and Psycho animas. Generally speaking, you want it to go Tank -> Melee -> BLM/SMN/RDM -> WHM. Hysteroanima is most useful at the beginning of the battle in order to be able to deal a lot of damage to the Mega Boss without fear of being owned by a damaging AoE TP attack. Psychoanima, when used at Mega Boss 50% health left, will allow the end of the fight to be done with ease because the Mega Boss will just keep getting intimidated and be unable to attack normally.
I recommend that each person go into the BC with one of each anima. Even if you don't use them, you'll have them for the next time you go into the BC or if things go terribly wrong, you have them at your disposal :)
Map
The map of each Promyvion area is gained by acquiring a memosphere. Memospheres are dropped from the following empty monsters:
Promyvion-Holla: Thinker, Cerebrator (teal memosphere)
Promyvion-Mea: Craver, Covetor (indigo memosphere)
Promyvion-Dem: Gorger, Satiator (beryl memosphere)
The Cerebrator, Covetor and Satiator I do not recommend attempting to kill with one party. They are extremely difficult NMs to kill with a level 30 cap. The frequency with which these monsters drop the map increases as you go up, so if you manage to kill one of them on the fourth floor, the map item is almost a guarantee.
Once you have a memosphere, you have to find a ??? in the Promyvion area in which it was attained. These ??? areas are guarded by lots of angry empty monsters, but easily killable if you pull them one at a time. The map is not really useful except to mark the locations of possible MR spawns.

Hopefully this is useful to you as you attempt to get past PM1-3 and into Tavnazian Safehold. I am always up to help people travel through the Promyvion areas (I'm to PM5-3 myself ^^) so please just let me know if you want assistance. I think I can almost walk the crags in my sleep *g*
