View Full Version : A meet-up...IRL?

We've had a chance to talk about this a few times in game, but not really made any plans towards that end. There are an awful lot of members that know each other outside the game, and visiting each other, even LAN parties for a few members aren't unheard of.
This is something a little different, though, and I'm hoping more will be interested than just the locals. Every year, between October and November, this year October 2nd through November 14th, there is a Rennaissance Festival near Houston. I make an attendance every year to it, at least one weekend, and in the past I made that trip the same weekend as the Ultima Online (my old MMORPG) players luncheon, in which there would be a full luncheon, meeting with the devs, and camp-out parties (always having some fun-juice and sometimes a keg).
Ultima Online is in decline, and is hardly enough to bring players from all corners, but the core group that held the players luncheon are still going to make a luncheon, this time likely holding a All-MMO Players Luncheon. That makes for a decent size group, and I will make an attendance. At the very least will we have the same type of group, enoying the weekend and the renfest, and pleanty of outside and inside discussions and chats. Meaning it isn't one of those "Addicted to Games Anonymous Meetings". Its a community party, doing something a lot of us enjoy doing already, and co-ordinating to do it together. (Drinking and dancing and talking and games and etc)
So what I want to do is start planning now. If there is enough support from people that want to meet and are definitely willing to go, I volunteer to help set-up advanced group admissions and make arrangements for the camp-out, and likely will either procure, or assist the core crew in procuring, a keg for the weekend. Who knows, if enough show up, we might even have more in store.
By the way, please note that in the past, we have been able to get groups of up to 80 members to come to the meets, which definitely allows for a group ticket discount, and amoung enough people, their picnic/luncheon have been much more affordable than supplying everything ourselves. If everyone does want to attend, then advance notice and planning is definitely the way to go.
All those interested please reply here, and we'll see what all we can muster. In the meantime, I'll be staying in touch with the APL and see how much of a plan they are working out. I will even try to put my two-cents in and see if we can impose a few of our wishes or ideas.
Wow, that sounds like a great idea. I would definately go! This would be a great chance to finally meet the people we talk to every day. Sounds like fun, count me in!
I dunno about the camp out but I may be able to. College Station is like 20 minutes away from Ren Fest. ^_^ We can probably crash the apartment if there aren't too many people. Just let me know.

I have decided against doing an catered UO lunch or MOG event at TRF this year. There are several reasons...
1. TRF just charges too much and delivers too little to our group. They want half of the money up front, which I don't have and don't think I can get in time to reserve our space. The space we had last year sucked.
2. I have personal issues going on and am just unable to pull it all together this year.
3. OSI is no longer in Austin and I don't suppose they plan to fly in to go to TRF this year. I haven't had the time/energy to drum up support from other local (or non local) companies to promise to send out reps or prizes.
However. I do plan to hold an informal event this year. I still plan to head out to TRF on Columbus Day weekend. I plan to bring my boys. I would still love to camp as a group with anyone else that is going. I would love to still all meet together in the Italian Village at 1pm on Sat, Oct 9 and BS about games and whatnot. I just dont want to pay TRF $50 each to do it.
I am still willing to get group-rate discount tickets for anyone that will RSVP to me before Oct 1. I will still take payment for said tickets by Paypal. Tickets at the front gate are $21. I can offer tickets at $18 by Paypal (that includes what I will be charged to take online payment, I can take $17 each if you mail it to me before Oct 1) Got to www.paypal.com and send to heather@playerslunch.com . May I also suggest that you can get tickets for $16 each if you order online at http://texrenfest.com before this Friday, Sep 17.
I would love to see a large group of players from many different games. I am currently playing World of Warcraft Beta, and looking forward to what comes from Tabula Rasa. I have also been hosting UO Meetups and Star Wars Galaxies Meetups in Austin. I am still very much looking forward to seeing you all at TRF this year!

This is the message I have recieved from the Player's Lunch Organizer. I myself was getting worried because no plans had begun preparation and she had not responded to e-mails until today. What this basically means is that the groups rates may be staunted by the fact that she will be holding back from organizing her full force for the TRF Event. It means that I will have to do more to organize this event, and with so little people, the lunch portion may not be feasible.
Okay, so I need a solid show of hands who will show. I can, as can she, get tickets for $16 a day, I believe, if we order them supra-fast, but more than likely we would have to settle for $17-$18 per ticket, which is only saving $5 over the door. I will also take charge of contacting the site and see if the camping charge is waived for prepurchase ticket holders, and will manage the organizing of the rest of the weekend myself.
Any way we go, though, it is imperative I know as soon as possible how many will show, so I know how large scale the plans should be.
I'll go, I just need some dates.

Date is projected at Saturday, October 9, the meet-up for the cross game activities would be 1 p.m., but since its Saturday, what we usually end up doing is camping out Friday Night, Go to the Faire Saturday, Camp out Saturday night, and a lot end up going Sunday, too. I will be making arrangements myself to camp out Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night, to drive back Monday morning.

So bringing this up again. Less than a week to go.
I plan on driving down Friday day, and getting set-up early as I can. I will stay Friday night and Saturday night, all else pending.
Um...the bad thing is that I don't have a cellphone. So getting a hold of me isn't easy once I leave here. I do hope I'll be seeing others down there, and looks like I will have cashola to stop and buy...um..food and stuff. Yeah, that's it, food and stuff.
Anyways...
Am I the only one thrilled?
I'm still trying to figure out if I can go or not. I really would like to meet everyone. So who all is going? It better be more than just Sari....But like I said I would really like to go to this to meet everyone, and also because I've never been to one before and I've always wanted to go. So umm yea I'll try to work things out so I can go.
And what's the deal with not having a cell phone, Sari! :whacked: How am I supposed to figure out where to go once I get there! Which brings up this question: where will we meet?
Oh, and Shido, you better go! And you better be wearing that red mage costume, too!!
Also, any word on the ticket prices yet, Sari?
i need to get with shido to see if he is going and find out how much tickets are gonna be.

Any that will be looking for me there, I am leaving now so I'll be there in about 5 or 6 hours. I will try to get a site as close to the Faire itself as I can. from the place where they have the bonfire, I would look south towards the faire itself, I will be driving a Black Pathfinder. I'm going to try to be setup by the time everyone getts there (not that there's an awful lot to set-up).
Hopefully see everyone soon.

For future reference, when planning such an event, Sari needs to look at the weather channel. Cold front does not equal "not hot". Cold front equals "chilly, windy, and rainy".
So oh well, cut the day short, wound up just having a KILLER friday night party. Knowing I wasn't going to stay, I managed to drink and give a away to passing strangers 5 cases of jun fuice. I started the fire for the drum circle, kept it alive til 4 a.m., and was the one to put it out for the night.
Oh, and plus I got some nooky ^^
Sorry if anyone decided to go last minute. I was kinda expecting if anyone was going to show, it would've been last night or this morning, and by then no one came looking for me. By myself, and rainy, does not make for a good renfest, so I came home. So-so sorry if I missed anyone, or more specifically if you missed me.
