I love reading debates about this, even though I hate math. So I decided to post it here.

Does .9 (repeating) = 1 ?

.999 = 1 is not a found statement. It is a supposed statement. Though there is so little difference between .999 and 1, using the same logical argument you would say that .111 =1/10 and .222 = 2/10 and etc. Therefore, .110 > 1/10 and therefore .110 > 1.111.

Though you aren't supposed to multiply or divide mathematical infinites, the point is that under the pretense of assuming the 1/9s decimal infinites are equal to the 1/10s decimal integers, you lose a decimal integer in the infinite truncation. Then, to say somewhere within their logic, .1 by that theory equals 0.

.999 = 1 is a false mathematical statement.

its a completely true statement, the easiest way is as the whole x = .9999... and 10x = 9.99999... approach, but if u wanna avoid the multiplication, simply take the summation of (9/(10)^n) as n goes from 1 to infinity. the limit converges to 1 when u get to infinity.

These statements you guys are talking about could indeed be true if you were rounding a final answer. 0.99999 repeating would round to 1 no matter what decimal place you rounded to. However, although there is little difference to none, it is still not the SAME number, just very very very very very close.

trust me, its the same number....since they are both real numbers, the only way for them not to be the same is to name a real number that is between them...you cant. therefore (for yet another reason) they are the same number. (leta, B.S. in math)

....I already agreed with you Leta lol. However, 1>.999999etc, unless you round first. Of course, you HAVE to round to 1 because it goes on forever, with the last number you count it HAS to round up to 1. Humans as a whole cannot comprehend infinity, because something that doesn't end isn't tangible. So yes, in all regards, .99999 = 1.
