Not sure if anyone has checked this out yet, or even cares but:

http://www.playonline.com/pcd/topics/ff11us/detail/2422/detail.html

And also this site helps decifer a bit of the background and what it could possibly mean for the role of a dancer in ffxi.

More and more, this looks like a female only job class. Can't wait to see what guys get.

I bet the male only job (if there is one) will be a pet job of some sort or chocobo knight.

"Using magic to animate the remains of the deceased, throngs of the hopeless and grieving would choke the streets in processions of living and dead, booming in chorus as they danced the Totentanz in a form of morbid catharsis."

That right there creeps me out. /shiver

Alas, it appears to be so afterall... 'heroines' 'maidens' etc.... males better get something good... too bad though, I wanted to be as flamboyantly gay as possible as a dancer :(

Meh, it's too bad they didn't go with like bard for males and dancers for females... but then again people would complain about that too. *shrugs* Maybe there will be male dancers.... break dancers.... eddy gordo.... ok maybe not lol ya hoping they got something for males lol.

If anybody's interested, the names of the dances are taken from German:
Kriegstanz = war dance
Totentanz = death dance, dance of the dead
Schwerttanz = sword dance (aoe damage?)
Gauklertanz = juggler dance, fool's dance

In terms of game mechanics, Totentanz sounds like the ability to charm KO'd player characters similar to how some monsters (Lamia, Orc NMs, BST NMs) can charm living player characters. If this is the case, I wonder how they'll handle a bunch of dancers swarming an HNM with dead party members. I mean they're already dead... they can't possibly make them indestructable. However they decided to implement it, it sounds like an entirely new type of ability in addition to any enfeebling/buffing abilities.

That's a weird idea. If you died, then a dancer "rose" you, would you eat an exp loss while "killed" again under the dancer's control? Would this charm-ish ability be cancel-able and cause you to fall back dead wherever you are? Would this only work on PCs who are in party while dead?

This idea of having undead PC "pets" would be a good excuse to stop people from asking for a necromancer job to be added.

Flip this over for NMs:
Dancer mob kills a mass of people, then charms them and has an "undead" army of player chars. Only tactic in that situation (since you can't get killed again?) would be to force d/c.

Unfortunately, knowing SE, it will just be a way for dancers to raise people. I doubt they would implement a dance to make an army of undead players, that would upset the game balance too much. Plus making someone not being able to control their own character could cause a whole lot of problems. (ie. Jerks keeping someone "zombied" for 20 minutes as a joke) I know that's what I would do with that ability >8)

Totentanz = death dance, dance of the dead

My guess is that itll be a dance that can affect the skeletons and undead

thats what i was thinking, or a dance that necromances dead mobs, like charm for dead things.

either or....i am really getting a kickass feeling about all of this!!! too bad it seems to be female only.

Totentanz is actually already in the game... as an ENM in Boneyard Gully against a Corse main mob that summons other undead mobs like skeletons and ghosts. It's the 18 person ENM, but can be done with less... like 3 monks with Hundred Fists pretty much means it's a win.

Seriously? Crap, I should set up some runs so I can (re)obtain a blau dolch :x (seriously, wtf, I sell it back after one day, and it goes up a half million? Balogna!)

But yeah, even though it sounds female only, it wouldn't be too hard to make it open to all genders. In game, the NPC that flags the job quest, assuming it takes place in the present world, could just say something about this "ancient art" and how it was utilized primarily by females. Then he could go on to say how having "male" dancers was useful in that they could be dance partners for females, or how "times have changed" and the dancer job is no longer sex-specific. So basically, the past was sexually segregated, and now we're breaking those walls down. :p
