This thread is purely for showcasing anime series that you enjoyed, and think other people would enjoy. I'd like not to get bogged down in a lot of chat, it makes it harded to peruse =P

Also, please post just one or two series at a time, along with some pictures and a short synopsis. Don't just list 6 anime you like, give us a little meat to bite into =D

I'll start off with a good series I finished a couple weeks ago, Welcome to the NHK

A young japanese man, Sato, one day wakes up and realizes his life has gone to squat. He has become a member of a growing segment of the Japanese population, a Hikikomori. He dropped out of college, doesn't have a job or any friends, and is currently living in a small apartment financed by his parents.

The main plot of the series is Sato's many attempts to break out of his Hikikomori lifestyle, and become a real member of society. However he's pretty weak-willed, and continually finds new ways to slide back down to the bottom. He gets caught up in a Pyramid Scheme, becomes engrossed in an MMORPG, and a few times almost commits suicide.

The series deals with a lot of issues that plague real-life Hikikomori: Paranoid Fantasies, Conspiracy Theories, Online Games, Suicide, Get-Rich Quick Schemes, etc. The main point though, is showing how it's possible to triumph over these hurdles.

Ok, Finalwolf's given me permission to repost his reviews scattered around the forums, so lets start with Higurashi:

good to see wondo is alive and kicking.

Higurashi No Naku Koro ni
wow, this anime is a great mystery.
takes place in a small village with a weird custom.
A new kid moves into the neighborhood and befriends the classmates easily.
each classmate has a dark secret.
the new kid goes nuts (or maybe not ;3 )
People die... but why?
this anime is freaking cool
The anime is extremely cute, chibi, kawaii...... then is gore, blood, paranoia.
remember, it's a mystery anime, clues will be left all over the place, some obvious

I only watched the first story arc... must watch more.

Next we've got some Tengen Toppa. Let me throw in right here, that this is one of the best series I've ever watched. Words cannot do this show justice, you just have to see it:

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
this is about the best anime series currently running at the momemt.
This is an epic anime.
a key point in the anime is overcoming the impossible

Humans are forced to live underground, in fear of the beastmen race, which uses mechs called Ganmen.
In one underground village, one person, Kamina had the desire to see the surface again, but he had no means to reach it. Kamina talks Simon into helping him reach the surface.

Simon, the main character of the anime. He's a digger, a job that uses a drill to create tunnels. He has an unnatural talent, that he can hear the earth and drill more efficiently (not used much in the latter episodes.)

On one of simon's digs, he finds a tiny drill, that glowed. he keeps it as a treasure. Later that night, he discovers a mechanical face hidden in the rocks.
The mechanical face is latter named Lagann, controlled by Simon

Won't get to involved, i could be typing for hours on this....
basically they break the surface while fighting a Ganmen, meet up with Yoko, a girl who is very skilled with range weapons.
Later, Kamina steals a Ganmen and calls it Gurren

Kamina sets his goal on bigger and grander things as he wants to go higher then the surface, but he realizes on Simon a lot, in turn Simon depends on Kamina a lot to (their relationship is awesome, both give strength and courage to the other)

Gurren Lagann is unique. Lagann more specifically his the smaller, but more powerful mech. uses the ability of Spiral Power (Spiral Power will be explained in the anime.) In most mech animes, the drill is considered the weakest and the easiest maneuver, in the series, the Drill attack is freaking strongest

The art style is pretty unique, like One Piece. the style gives the freedom of intensity or the freedom to add wacky things.. like a grape + hippo creature
The Ganmen are unique mechs too. the main feature is a giant face, inwhich the arms and legs are attached to. later on, the more developed mechs have 2 faces (the chest is usually still the primary face)

For all intent purpose, skip episode 4. the animation was handle by a different director and is was pure crap. you can watch it if you're a masochist.

First story arc is episode 1 - 15 (I personally watch episode 15 about 6 times now, freaking amazing). episode 16 being the summary.

2nd story arc, is freaking amazing. the events keep getting grander and the development of character and story is great.

Two for one special, Tsukaima and Solty Rei:

Zero no Tsukaima (Familiar of Zero)

it's a cute anime with a twist. I won't give much as of spoilers.

main chick is Louise, a cutsie spellcaster... who really sucks at casting magic.
her nickname is Zero or Zero Louise, cause of her 0% of getting a magic spell correct. not sure of the planet/parallel world, what it is called.

main guy is Saito, from Earth

Louise being a 2nd year student at a magician school are giving permission to summon a spiritual familiar, as well as the rest of the 2nd year students.
Now the classroom students summoned all kinds of familiars, a sylpheed, fire salamander, bugbear, owl, cats etc...
come Louise's turn to summon, she summons a human boy, name Saito as a familiar.
Louise basically treats Saito was a slave familiar, cause of the world's traditions and she did summon him as a pet, so she doesn't acknowledge that he is human ..for a while
things get interesting as the story unravels and with a lil' twist near the end episodes.
Saito was really cool in the anime. He had no way of getting back home, so he basically makes Louise's life hell (she was *****y at time anyways.) He also went against a lot of the world's rules, causing trouble.

it's a good anime, worth the download if you like cutsie

Solty Rei

The title "solty rei" is a record album with plays an important part in the background story.

Solty Rei is focused on Roy who is a bounty hunter for an agency and Solty who is a machine, who is very human-like.
12 years ago, there was a Blast-Fall, (so far an unexplained event) that cause ruin to part of the world and dropped the atmospheric height drastically (no skyscrapers or planes, but existing satellites can still transmit data). The sky is constantly filled with auroras. Roy lost his daughter during the first Blast-Fall.

move to present, Roy is a hardass grumpy bounty hunter, who life was saved by an android. the android follows him around, until Roy finally lets her in, he also adopts her, cause of the government standards in this world.
Roy's solitaire lifestyle is turned upside down as Solty lives with him. They go on a few hunts to earn a living, meanwhile R.u.c. a pharmaceutical company that is basically controlling the world tightens its grip. well, there's more to it, but I don't wanna spoil to much.

I'm currently watching it, finished off 3 dvds, finish the next 2 later.
I'm really enjoying the anime. Solty is cute as hell, her voice is adorable, along with her mannerism. the anime starts out quirky and funny, but the anime gets darker around the 3rd dvd.


Solty: she just to cute, even the wacky hairstyle grew on me. her clothing is pretty close to the chick in Mezzo (the series.) Those things sticking from the side of her head, those are her ears, they wag when she's happy

I am probably one of the few fans of this series.
my sister bought the whole series last year and never watch it, while I stayed up the whole night until morning watching it.
I love this anime.

ok, about this series. the series is done in minimalist style, usually focus on one color (mostly black) and shapes will be a different color, add to the overall mood. there is a lot of scenes of stained-glass styled artwork, the anime is just beautiful to watch at time.

Kyosuke was "killed" by his mother, she stabbed him through the heart. He is later dug by a girl. the girl happens to be a flicker, a fragment of a soul (the soul of Kyosuke's sister.) Kyosuke's journey has him locating and trying to protect the flickers from the Hospital (that's the evil organization's name)
everytime Kyosuke experience near-death situations (like getting stabbed in the heart... shot in the heart...fist punched into the heart....), he's "demon" powers awaken and he takes the form of Soultaker (insert 80's heavy metal, yes!!!!!)

Komugi is actually a Hospital superfreak, but she turns good. she's the cute character in the whole series. She later stars in her own spin-off series.


Resevoir Chronicles Tsubasa

this anime was driving me nuts a little, i recognized a lot of the characters... then it hit me, this is a CLAMPS series, but not actually animated by CLAMPS usual studio.

music is fantastic, seems to be the same group as in .Hack//Signs

this anime is basically an "elseworld (see DC comics)" of the CLAMP universe.
RCT actually acts as a bridge for connecting all the worlds that clamp created.

now, I only watched the first dvd (5 episodes or was it 4...forgot), and saw a big list of people from other series.

The series revolves around Syaoran, Sakura, Fay, Kurogane and Mokona

Syaoran and Sakura are from Card Captor Sakura.
Mokona is from Magical Knight Rayearth

also appearing in the first dvd

Chii from Chobits
Yuko from xxxHolics
Sorata and Arashi from X (they got married in this series <3 ) (they were 2 people in the dragon of earth clan)
Shougo (another dragon of earth)
Tomoyo, Touya (from card captor)
there's also a lot of smaller stuff, like the names of shops, that are repeated in a bunch of CLAMPS' series.

Sakura is a princess of a world, in which Syaoran lives in to. Syaoran is following his father's dream as an archaeologist in Sakura's kingdom (sakura's bro is the king of the realm.)

in one of the sites, Sakura goes into a trance-like state and opens the seal. Syaoran eventually finds her, but interupts the seal opening process, in turn, causing Sakura to lose all her memory as fragments in the form of feathers.

To save her, he travels to the dimensional rift and meets with Fay (who is running away from his world) and Kurogane (who was sort of banished from his world.) all 4 people are warped to a new world and the adventure starts there. Syaoran, Kurogane, Fay all have different desires, but the path is the same for all, to they join.

so, for the first dvd, the story build up is good. seem each world has it's own unique properties. the first world, people had elemental spiritual protectors, so the group acquired their own, for that world. look like they were having pokemon battle. oh ya... the 3 protectors the group gets are the spiritual animals from Magical knight rayearth named.. Rayearth, windam and seles

only tiff about the artwork, people can get really elongated.... like arms and legs 3x body length. doesn't happen to often.

I am definitely waiting for more dvds, hell might just download the series

Blackcat, and Shakugan:

Blackcat

Train is the 13th assassian for an organization call Chronos. His nickname is Blackcat.
Train meets Saya, and starts to become a changed man. Later Train leaves Chronos, and starts to form his own free will.

During his time in Chronos, Train is assigned to kill Eve. Sven is a sweeper (a bounty hunters), who meets with Eve and protects her from Train.

the story progress and Train, Sven, and Eve travel together.
Sven becomes a "father" to Eve.

as the group travels, other super freaks and the rest of Chronos are hunting Train, Eve and Sven.

This anime rocks.

Ok, now in his original post Final wasn't able to put in a short synopsis, so I'ma try my best here, lol.

Ok, this dude Yuji is minding his own business one day, when the world freezes. ({Temporal Shift}?) He's wondering wtf, when a monster comes out and starts eating people. Moster sees he's not frozen, and decides that must make him supa~tasty or something cuz he comes running at homedude. This chick pops outta nowhere, and owns the monster dude. Turns out ol' Yuji is already dead or something, but his current form possesses some super-power thing so it's all good. The two set off to own them some monsters. That's about the best I can do, I'm not really all that great at writing these <.<;


Shakugan no Shana

This is a must watch.
Fantastic story, that is has a harsh background.

Tenjho Tenge and Melody of Oblivion:

I'm watching Tenjho Tenge (8dvds in America)

It's a school-life fight club type of anime.
Lots of fighting
lots of humor too.

a little more detail. The one school has a hidden past. the school is around to revive lost and secret martial art styles. The school houses almost every fighting style in the world, each style is assigned a "club", each club has it's members, the leaders of the clubs tend to have unworldly strength, chi, speed. The leaders are all under control of the school student president.

ok, so you know the school, 2 street thugs kids come to the school looking for a fight and..... they get "schooled" themselves. The story follows these 2 guys and the club that accepts them. The rest of the clubs want to get rid of the 2 guys and the leader of their club, cause that leader is such uberpwnage.

this anime is made of win!

honestly, i gotta rewatch this. my sis watched the whole series (6 dvds, 24 episodes) in 1 day, i was watching during dynamis

Humans and Monsters were engaged in a huge war, then the war ended, the monsters were incontrol of the world. human children are kinda a fuel source, for many whacky monstrous things. Warriors of Melody are on a journey to rid the planet of the ruling monsters

This anime is part whacky, part ecchi ( <3) and serious at times

this is the best series I seen since Berserk.
This anime is a lot like Ninja Scroll, but with a much larger, more passionate love story.
The series is licensed by Gonzo, I only have the first disc and so far it's on my top 5 now.
It's very violent, blood and freaky character.
2 ninja clans are fighting, had a 400 year grudge. a man and women from opposing clans love each other, trying to end the fued. There's a lot more to the story, don't feel like typing it.
Ninja clans has an animal symbol,..snake and bird... Basilisk = snake-like bird thingy.

Ok, I loved this anime.
loli vampire Hizuka bites Kouhei (freelance photographer) to make a blood pact, too bad Kouhei is so spiritually thick-headed magic and curses don't effect him.
Stuff happens, she goes to Japan to find her mother and ends up moving in with Kouhei.
The anime has it's serious moments and comedy moments. I love the title song. There's a bunch of random stuff throughout the series.
1) the opening theme has different scene throughout
2) the closing credits, at the very end has a guest art done from a different company, which is pretty cool.
3) bath pans, for no reason will fall on people, even in the serious scene (i found it funny)
4) random things will look like or be giving "neko mimi" (cat ears)

This anime is well worth the time to watch. The ending left it open for a sequel. Also, other things that were happening in the anime that didn't get resolved, left an opening.

good series, cute.
It's a funny harem with witches and 1 holy crusader
the only problem is the very ending, a really stupid way to wrap up the series (which leaves a possible opener for another)

The funniest part is the introduction of Cait Sithe (a scottish cat demon), who was cursed to be pair of panties

Now come on dudes, I didn't start this thread to talk to myself, lets get a little enthusiasm here! d<.<

Anyway, I decided to tackle a big one, one of the most successful anime franchises to date, one of the longest-running anime ever, and one of (In my opinion at least >.>) the best anime series out there, period. I'm talking of course, of the legendary One Piece. All things considered I'm probably not the best person for this, because I'm really bad at putting down deep thoughts into readable words. However, I shall do my best!

Oh good giggity where to start? I'm not even going to go into some of the history of this series and importation attempts stateswide by various companies, if you don't already know aboot that just wiki it, it explains it pretty well. However I higly recommend that you watch this series in the original japanese with dependable subs. I'm not saying this as to whether or not I personally prefer subbed/dubbed, but the dubs seriously raped this series, lol. Again, wiki it if you wanna know more.

The central themes, as best I can distill them, aren't anything really new, they don't break the mold. They look at the mold, say "That ain't big enough dammit", and bring in a bigger f***ing mold. the first theme is to Follow Your Dream... real original there huh? I must say, as hackneyed as it seems, they drive it f***ing home. They turn this, from something you'd expect to find in a children's book, into something extraordinary. The second theme, is "Nakama". Now I'm not trying to be all "lolJapaneseIz1337" and substitute a japanese word where an english one suffices. There's a detailed explanation as to why the actual word is much grander than a mere translation could provide. It means teamate, crew member, family, friend, and a whole mess of other yadda yadda yadda. It means, in a nutshell, being there for the people who mean something to you, and vice versa. Again, a simplistic theme taken to extraordinary heights, I really can't do this series justice, I'm sorry >.<.

Moving on, the series dabbles in a little bit of everything. it's got action, comedy, fights, friendship, adventure, chocobos (They're actually spot-billed ducks but you say potato...) and a man made out of rubber. There have been around 340 episodes produced so far, most of which are very true to the source material. (A shonen jump manga series, One Piece). There's also been like, 5 movies. This is a good, popular, quality series here. It's made me laugh, cry, and on several occasions stand up and go "RAWR, EXTREME!" like I haven't since I first watched tengen toppa <.<;. It'll get to ya, lol.

If you still need some convincing, I higly recommend viewing one of the main story arcs. If it's your first time seeing it, I have to recommend the Arlong Park Saga. It's comparatively short, compared to some of the later ones. It takes place fairly early in the series, so there's not a horrible amount of backstory and in-jokes that you'll miss out on, because most of the characters are still fairly new and easy to pick up on. Although I shouldn't recommend picking up any series in the middle of one of the big parts, One Piece starts off really weak. It's not that it starts off slow, or toned-down or anything, but it kinda... glances off you. Until you've really seen these guys in action, it seems... well it seems kinda stupid (I wish I could think of a better way to describe this >.<). But seriously, watch the Arlong Park Saga. it's only like... 12 or so episodes. If that doesn't get you hooked, I doubt what will.... because you're probably like a robot or stupid or something <.<;

Pumpkin Scissors!

Corrupt people protect themselves behind lies, power, money and many other layers around them like a pumpkin. Section III must act like a pair of scissors cutting through those layers and delivering justice to them.

This is a pretty good series, it takes place in an age around WWII, tanks, guns, rifles, but no wireless communications or automatic firearms. Basic plot is that there's recently been a devestating war between most of the known world, and after the cease-fire countries have been struggling to rebuild. That's where Section III, or the Pumpkin Scissors, comes in. It was originally just a department to stick people so they wouldn't cause trouble, acting under the term "War Reperations." However, the Lieutenant, Alice L. Malvin, decided to broaden the term "War Reperations," and has since expanded the power of the section considerably, according to her immense sense of justice. There's no Mecha, no Magical Girls, but that doesn't stop this series from kicking loads of ***, most of which is accomplished by the newest recruit, Corporal Randal. ****er takes down tanks. With a pistol... It's... a pretty big pistol.
